UNEP-FI Global Roundtable

Initiated in 1994, the UNEP FI Global Roundtable carries-on a now well-established tradition that has spanned the globe from New York to Frankfurt, Rio de Janeiro to Tokyo.

15 years on, the roundtable is now widely recognized as a major global agenda-setting event in sustainable finance. This event offers an opportunity for leaders of the financial world and environmental experts to come together to discuss and exchange views on sustainability issues and “responsible” financing.

The roundtables have significantly contributed with ideas and ways on how to address emerging challenges in environmental, social and governance issues that relate to global financial industry. The series of biennial roundtables has been one of the UNEP Finance Initiative advocacy instruments for sustainable finance.

The 2009 event took place for the first time in Africa and was a great success with over 450 participants traveling from across the world to Cape Town where the city hosted its first “Green Week”. Senior executives from the banking, insurance, and investment industries, academia and government officials – Minister of Finance and Minister of Energy of the Republic of South Africa- discuss the latest ideas and challenges around the event’s theme topics, “Financing change, Changing finance”.

Integrating Ecological Risk in Sovereign Credit Ratings and Investments

This project seeks to assess financial materiality of ecological risks relevant for the credit risk evaluation of government bonds. Global Footprint Network and UNEP FI will work together with different financial institutions (asset owners, investment managers, credit rating agencies and information providers) to analyse the linkages between ecological and financial risk, and explore how Ecological Footprint trends can shed light on financially material threats and risks that are not currently included in credit ratings. Other potentially relevant criteria, which are currently not accounted for in credit ratings, will also be analysed and integrated into the methodology. The aim is to foster shared learning from working with a number of banks, investors and credit rating agencies, and to enable the integration of ecological risk in sovereign credit ratings and government bonds.

A workshop will take place on October 17 in advance of the UNEP FI Global Roundtable.

Trade, Investment and Climate Change: Searching for Progress on Key Issues

Unilateral action on climate change is increasingly being examined from the perspective of international trade and investment law. Of particular prominence in recent debates has been the validity of green industrial policies and of measures addressing competitiveness loss and leakage. The conference will explore these issues, and also the role of the trade community in securing international cooperation and solutions.

This conference forms part of IISD’s Trade, Investment and Climate Change Program, funded by the Ministries of Foreign Affairs of Norway and Sweden, and by the Swedish MISTRA Foundation’s ENTWINED network.

Registration& Further Information: To register for this event, please complete the form attached and return to Elka Parveva-Kern([email protected]) by 30 September 2011. Further logistics details will be provided upon registration. For more information on conference content, please contact Lucy Kitson(mailto:[email protected])

Eleventh RRI Dialogue on Forests, Governance and Climate Change:

The meeting will examine the current state of public and private financial mechanisms for REDD+ and adaptation and contribute to developing an updated vision for the optimal design and deployment of finance to reduce forest loss and degradation – while respecting the rights and development needs of local people.  This meeting will take stock of lessons learned to date regarding the possibilities of a global forest carbon market, scope for individual projects, and the experiences with national and regional public funds.  The debate will aim to better understand the potentials and limits of each approach and the conditions in which one approach is more appropriate than another.  The meeting will contribute to more informed and decisive negotiations on finance during the UNFCCC COP17 in Durban.

Clean Development Mechanisms and Joint Implementation:

The Kyoto Protocol requires countries to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions. To help countries achieve their emission reduction targets, the Kyoto protocol introduced two market based mechanisms: The Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) and the Joint Implementation (JI).

CDM allows a country, firm, or individual to implement projects that reduce or remove emissions in developing countries and to earn certified emission reduction credits. The CDM is meant to stimulate sustainable development and emission reductions in developing countries, while giving industrialized countries some economic flexibility in how they meet their emission reduction or limitation targets.

JI allows a country, firm, or individual to implement an emission reduction project and earn emission reduction units that can be sold. The main difference between the CDM and JI lies in their application, as JI projects can only be hosted by developed countries.

The course provides a comprehensive overview of the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) and the Joint Implementation (JI). It was developed by WBI’s Carbon Finance Assist program and the Greenhouse Gas Management Institute.

The course is delivered in 10 modules which take about 20 hours to complete. It uses interactive presentations, case studies, and discussion forums.  The course will enable participants to:

  • Understand all aspects of the Kyoto Protocol’s project based mechanisms
  • Understand the governance of these mechanisms
  • Start a CDM of JI project
  • Understand the CDM and JI Project Cycles and corresponding rules and procedures

Latin American Carbon Forum

uilding on the success of five previous editions, the 2011 Latin American & Caribbean Carbon Forum (LACCF) will be held 27 – 29 September 2011, at the Hotel Double Tree Cariari by Hilton, in San José, Costa Rica.

This annual Conference and Exhibition is jointly organized by the World Bank, the Latin American Energy Organization (OLADE), the International Emissions Trading Association (IETA), UNEP and its UNEP Risí¸ Centre, the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), and the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).

With over 800 local, regional and international participants last year from private, public and the financial sectors, and this unique combination of co-organizers, the LACCF is the pre-eminent regional ‘Pulse Taking’ and ‘Business to Business’ platform. It brings together leading individuals and organizations in the field to share knowledge and information, discuss new tendencies, propose solutions, and identify business opportunities in what is a rapidly changing area.

This year’s topics focus on:

  • Processes of CDM projects and programs.
  • Developments of national, bilateral and international emission trading schemes.
  • The status and role of voluntary carbon markets.
  • Climate change mitigation policies analysis, including NAMAs, sector-based approaches, and REDD.
  • Discuss the current status and future of the Mechanism.
  • While facilitating business opportunities between CERs buyers and sellers from the region.

This platform occurs at a crucial moment for global carbon markets:

  • With the widespread lack of certainty as to the architecture of the carbon market post-2012
  • The increasing fragmentation of the market.
  • The abundance of emerging mechanisms and sources of climate finance.

Objectives

The core objective of the LACCF is to bring together main actors of the carbon market such as:

  • Project owners, project developers and potential CDM sectoral institutions;
  • National climate change focal points, national Clean Development Mechanism offices, Investment Promotion Agencies, Designated National Authorities;
  • Service providers, financial institutions and intermediary companies.

LACCF promotes a discussion and exchange of experiences among carbon market stakeholders and provide participants the latest developments of mission trading schemes and the future of the CDM.

The Forum focuses on analysing the international and national climate change mitigation policies and facilitate a comprehensive debate about the negotiation of greenhouse gases (GHG) emission reductions. Finally the LACCF seeks new impulses for increasing the volume of low carbon investments in Latin American.

Specifically, the VI Latin American Carbon Forum aims at:

  • Update on the different views of the challenges associated with global climate change, and the most recent developments in the international carbon market;
  • Discuss with project developers and technical specialists of a wide range of sectors and technologies arising from best practices and lessons learned for the implementation of CDM projects   and Programmatic CDM in Latin America and the Caribbean region;
  • Learn from the most respected experts from the public and private sector on strategies and measures aimed to reduce GHG and to   promote   the benefits of the CDM in the region;
  • Discuss about the potentialities of the carbon markets under the upcoming mitigation efforts to be implemented at international and national levels;
  • Hold bilateral meetings, both as attendance and by virtual means, between the national CDM offices, project owners, buyers of carbon credits, etc., during the business sessions; and
  • Seize opportunities to establish contacts throughout the Forum.

CarboForest Conference

Sustainable forest management has a vital and widely-established part in climate change mitigation. Quantifying the carbon stored in forest ecosystems, as well as the rates and direction of carbon fluxes emitted from and absorbed by forests, has become very important to improve understanding of their influence on the global carbon cycle. In many countries national programmes to protect and maintain forests have been initiated with the aim of reducing net carbon emissions and to stabilise or increase terrestrial carbon stocks in the long-term.

The CarboForest conference intends to provide a multi-disciplinary forum to discuss recent innovations and challenges related to all aspects of carbon storage and management in forest ecosystems. This meeting will bring together scientists, politicians and environmentalists from different disciplines to confer and communicate their most recent findings relevant to the global carbon cycle, with an emphasis on the role of forest ecosystems and will promote the cross-fertilization of the latest ideas and concepts in research, policy and practice. The main aims of the conference are to present actual achievements, focus the direction for further development in the area of carbon storage studies and stimulate the exchange of expertise. Critical discussion will cover the ecological, political, economical as well as technical aspects of carbon management, monitoring, reporting and verification of forest carbon stocks and their changes over time. Moreover, we offer the international community an open and creative forum for exchanging results and ideas on carbon capture and storage (CCS) in forest ecosystems.

The Conference will mainly focus on:

  • climate changes,
  • plant physiology,
  • soils,
  • carbon fluxes,
  • forest management,
  • inventory, modeling and reporting,
  • geomatics with special emphasis to remote sensing.

We feel honoured to invite everyone interested in carbon management in forest ecosystems to participate in the CarboForest conference, which is to be held  from 21 to 23 September 2011  in Poland. The programme will consist of invited lectures, short presentations and poster contributions, and contributions in either of these formats are welcome.

We are looking forward to meeting you in the Forest Research Institute in Sękocin Stary (Poland) for a stimulating discussion during the CarboForest conference!

The Climate Reality Project

Droughts, floods, heat waves, insect outbreaks, wildfires, sea level rise – we are encountering the reality of our changing climate every day. Five years after the theatrical release of An Inconvenient Truth, Nobel Laureate and former Vice President Al Gore will host an international event that brings the world together in a critical moment of global consciousness to deliver the message: The climate crisis is real, and it’s already happening.

Spanning 24 hours, 24 time zones and multiple languages, “24 Hours of Reality” features a new multimedia presentation about climate change created by Vice President Gore and delivered by an army of personally trained slide show Presenters from around the world. Beginning in Mexico City and proceeding westward around the globe, “24 Hours of Reality” offers a round-the-clock snapshot of the global climate crisis in real time, sharing unique perspectives on the crisis from Tonga to Cape Verde, Mexico City to Kotzebue, Alaska, Jakarta to London. With one event scheduled in each time zone at 7 p.m. local time, the entire 24 hours will also be streamed live online from start to finish, culminating in a final presentation by Vice President Gore in New York at 7 p.m.

By focusing the world’s attention on the climate crisis for an entire day, “24 Hours of Reality” is intended to create a global movement and inspire international action to solve the climate crisis the other 364 days of the year. At each event, we will highlight the projects and initiatives of in-country organizations and NGOs and offer information and opportunities for people to learn more and to get involved with ongoing activities in their own communities. This global discussion will lead to action to solve the climate crisis.

Special interest groups are spending huge amounts of money to convince people that climate change isn’t real while people around the world are already experiencing its effects.

Where do you stand? Choose Reality.

The organic sector is highly innovative, generating new solutions for the sustainable use of resources such as water, energy and soil, showing great potential for climate change mitigation and adaptation.

The market of organic products in Bulgaria enlarged significantly in the last few years. There will be a very efficient opportunity for the companies that will participate in the exhibition to expand their international network at the Bulgarian market of organic products and for the local participants also to set up new contacts and to start fruitful future partnerships.

The specialized exhibition on bio and eco products in September 2011 in Sofia emphasizes the role of organic production and investments in clean technologies. The event is directed at the important role of sustainable lifestyles and consumption in our everyday lives. It highlights the close links between food, health and the environment.

The BIO & ECO EXPO 2011 provides a wide range of natural and organic products, sustainable technologies, services, information and practical advice. It will be your ideal information destination: offering sustainable solutions for conscious consumers and responsible businesses.

10th RRI Dialogue Letterhead

__________________________________________________________________________

Organizers: Oxfam and Rights and Resources Initiative in collaboration with LAND Academy, Netherlands and EcoAgriculture Partners

RRI and Oxfam are proud to announce that this Dialogue will be held on September 7-8 in The Hague, Netherlands. The meeting will identify common approaches to dealing with the interconnected global challenges of responding to the food crisis, forest loss and degradation, the need to drive additional investment into agriculture, and adaptation to climate change.   The meeting will bring more focused attention to the interconnection between forests, agriculture, the rights of producers and affected populations, and the growing global demand for agricultural land and products.   By bringing together the communities of practice that deal with different but interrelated issues, the Dialogue will consider issues such as agriculture as a driver in forest loss and degradation, the role forests play in providing food for the rural poor, as well as the implications of the global effort to meet the challenge of feeding nine billion people by 2050 without destroying the natural resources on which rural and forest dwellers rely for their livelihoods and food security.

We anticipate that the meeting will set out an agenda to influence policy dialogues in a variety of fora, including the Committee on Food Security in October, the UNFCCC COP 17 in December, the International Ecoagriculture Conference in 2012, the follow-up conference to the Hague Global Conference on Agriculture, Food Security and Climate Change which will take place in Vietnam in 2012, and other forest, food and agriculture related initiatives.

More information, including venue details and registration, will be available shortly on the RRI website. Please contact [email protected] for more information.

11th RRI Dialogue

___________________________________________________________________________

Organizers: The Forest Peoples Programme, Forest Trends and RRI.

More information, including venue details and registration, will be available shortly on the RRI website. Please contact [email protected]  for more information.

Forest Carbon Seminar:

Terra Global Capital is dedicated to community involvement in REDD project implementation. This presentation will discuss the importance of community participation in REDD measurements and monitoring. It will outline the benefits and challenges, and our experiences in community-based data collection and working with our local partners.

Forest-dependent communities are identified as some of the poorest in the world. The developing REDD market can create new opportunities for rural communities, but only if communities truly understand, monitor and manage their assets. This requires building technical capacity within the local implementing organizations and communities including expertise in GPS use, remote sensing interpretation, biomass sampling and species identification. By effectively involving local partners and communities, REDD projects can be created cost-effectively and empower community members to provide long-term alternative livelihoods.

Please join Terra Global Capital on Wednesday, August 17th at 1:00pm as our lead field forester, Erica Meta Smith, directs this session on Participatory Field Data Collection for REDD: Lessons from the Field.

Earth Stewardship: Preserving and enhancing the earth’s life-support systems

Recent ESA meeting themes have included ecological restoration, linking research and education, planning sustainability of a global society, and global warming.   Earth stewardship continues this emphasis on application of ecological perspectives and knowledge to global concerns.   We must find simultaneous solutions to a suite of interconnected problems that threaten the ability of the earth to provide the services and resources on which we depend.   This will require integration of knowledge from the local to the global scale, from the sciences, humanities, and engineering, and from sources ranging from traditional knowledge of indigenous peoples to the most modern technological advances.   In an age when the world’s human population is increasingly isolated from the life-support systems of the earth, fostering a “sense of place” and global responsibility is critical to this effort.   Ecologists have a special understanding of the complex, multi-scale interactions underlying the earth’s life-support systems and must be leaders in society’s movement to earth stewardship in the 21st century.

The National Conference on Ecosystem Restoration

The first NCER, held in Orlando, FL (2004) with over 900 restoration practitioners participating, lead to successful conferences in Kansas City, MO (2007) and Los Angeles, CA (2009). NCER brings together nearly 1,000 scientists, engineers, policy makers, planners, and partners from across the country actively involved in ecosystem restoration.

Initiated by the University of Florida, U.S. Geological Survey, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and USDA’s Natural Resources Conservation Service, NCER typically entails five days of presentations in six program tracks, multiple workshops, poster sessions, field trips and coffee-house discussions dedicated to both small and large scale ecosystem restoration programs including but not limited to the Missouri and Mississippi River Basins, the Louisiana Coastal Area, Columbia River, the Everglades, the San Francisco Bay/Delta, the Chesapeake Bay, Great Lakes and Puget Sound, just to name a few.

2011 International Biodiversity Conference

The program selection committee of the 2011 International Biodiversity Conference is now accepting abstracts to participate in its third conference in Baí±os, Ecuador, July 29 – August 4, 2011.

 The committee encourages all researchers, wildlife managers, field ecologists, and environmental educators to share their research and findings in the areas of biodiversity, field ecology, environmental conflict resolution, and biogeography.

Why Baí±os, Ecuador?  Considered by many of our colleagues this area of Ecuador is one of the most biodiverse places on earth and one of the most dynamic in terms if speciation. Wild Spots Foundation over the past 25 years has involved ecologists, zoologists, geologists, and photographers to develop a photographic inventory of endangered/threatened plant and animal species in this part of the world. It is also a region where Ecuadorian and American scientists are defining new ecological habitats and discovering new species.  The Foundation with the support of its friends in Ecuador and around the world wish to learn more about this unique ecosystem,   share research from all over the world, and develop new questions for further study.

The 2011 International Biodiversity Conference is bilingual and sponsored by Wild Spots Foundation, San Martin Zoological Gardens, City of Baí±os, and several corporate sponsors.        Our general paper categories include:Ecological Biodiversity ResearchSpecies-Specific Research from around the worldBiodiversity in a changing climateBiogeography projects and related research Physical impact of volcanism upon biodiversityGIS and spatial ecology researchInnovative Environmental Education/Community Programs

Abstracts (250 word maximum) are now due.
 The deadline is June 1, 2011.   Please submit abstracts and the proposed title of your presentation to [email protected]. Paper acceptance is on an ongoing basis until presentation slots are filled.

Does REDD+ make international forestry more just?

You are invited to attend an evening public debate on the potential for REDD+ (Reduced Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation) to make international forestry more just. This is the first event in a series of UEA London Debates on Environmental Justice and International Development organised by the Global Environmental Justice Group at the University of East Anglia.

REDD+ (Reduced Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation) has the potential to make international forestry more just. Countries in the Global North are set to pay countries in the Global South for the conservation of forests, something that they have never done before. Yet REDD+ may also perpetuate or deepen forest people?Ts historical dispossession from their forests. As timber logging in the past, carbon forestry may work to the sole advantage of powerful state and industrial interests.

This public debate will bring the idea of global environmental justice to bear upon current debates about REDD+. It will bring together a variety of stakeholders in REDD+ to assess the justice implications of emergent REDD+ initiatives. The emphasis will be on highlighting how REDD+ has the potential to make international forestry more just in certain ways, but also poses serious dangers to make it more unjust in other ways.

Moderator: John Vidal, The Guardian

Panel: Kristy Graham, Overseas Development Institute (ODI)
