Position Title: Project Officer, specialising in Research and knowledge sharing

Location: Cape Town, South Africa
Salary: R10,000 – R20,000 per month, negotiable based upon experience

About the CKDN

The Climate and Development Knowledge Network (CDKN) is a new initiative designed to support developing countries in tackling the challenges posed by climate change. We operate at the interface of climate and development, and science and policy-making to support climate compatible development. We provide demandled research and technical assistance, and channel the best available knowledge on climate change and development to support policy processes at the country level. The CDKN is an alliance of six public and private sector organisations operating across the globe. Our African programme is led by SouthSouthNorth, based in Cape Town, South Africa. After an initial start up phase, we are now seeking to grow our team in Africa.

Roles and Responsibilities:

  • Programme manage the Research and knowledge sharing activities in Africa, including programme level strategy development, planning, budgeting and reporting
  • Project manage the Research and knowledge sharing projects in Africa, including identifying project opportunities, scoping and designing projects with service recipients (typically African Governments or other regional bodies), identifying and selecting service providers, overseeing project delivery and ensuring efficient monitoring and evaluation
  • Build the CDKN’s external profile within Africa through representing the CDKN at relevant conferences and events, and engaging with a wide range of stakeholders
  • Assist in the development and distribution of publicity materials such as website content, written features and online discussions
  • Daily team-working and collaboration with the Cape Town and London offices

Skills and Experience

Essential

  • At least 4 years relevant and successful work experience in the environmental, climate change and/or social and economic development fields
  • Experience of working in research or academia in Africa on climate and/or development issues
  • Track record of drafting regular features, newsletters, blog entries, editing the work of others, and managing workflow from multiple sources and subcontracting work to freelance writers and editors
  • Understanding of the linkages between climate change and socio-economic development
  • Experience of managing medium sized projects and budgets
  • Good ability to establish and maintain working relations with a range of high-level stakeholders in Africa
  • Excellent English oral and written communication skills
  • Willing to undertake travel related to the project

Highly Desirable

  • Experience of capacity building with African research institutions, Governments and/or civil society
  • French and/or Portuguese oral and written communication skills
  • An understanding of packaging research information for a wide range of users and what it takes, practically for research to inform policy development.

Qualifications

  • At least a Master’s Degree (or equivalent experience) in either:
    • A natural science field, including biology, environmental science or geography
    • A social science field, including international development or economics

  • Build the CDKN’s external profile within Africa through representing the CDKN at relevant conferences and events, and engaging with a wide range of stakeholders
  • Develop the CDKN’s media presence in Africa or relating to our African projects, through the development and distribution of publicity materials such as website content, written features and online discussions
  • Manage and drive the ongoing development and enhancement of the regional section of the CDKN website.
  • Assist in capacity building and mentoring for clients and core team members
  • Daily team-working and collaboration with the Africa and London offices

Skills and Experience

Essential

  • At least 7 years relevant and successful work experience in the environmental, climate change and/or social and economic development fields
  • Strong project management skills gained through the management of medium sized projects and budgets
  • Significant experience of knowledge management and communications for climate / development issues
  • Understanding of the linkages between climate change and social and economic development
  • Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain working relations with a range of high-level stakeholders in Africa including Governments, donors, public sector organizations and private sector organizations
  • Excellent English oral and written communication skills.
  • Willing to undertake travel related to the project

Highly Desirable

  • Experience working with international organizations including UN agencies, multilateral organizations and bilateral donors
  • Experience of capacity building with African Governments and civil society
  • French and/or Portuguese oral and written communication skills

Qualifications

  • At least a post graduate Qualification (or equivalent experience) in either a social science field, including international development or economics, a natural science field, including biology, environmental science or geography, or a communications field, including media or English
