Senior Program Manager – Energy & Environment

This is an outstanding opportunity to lead a team of top scientists and technical staff addressing emerging electric power industry needs related to the Water and Ecosystem Sciences. Manages multiple programs or project managers with emphasis on developing the priorities and strategy for the area managed, deployment and development of EPRI staff and the financial success of the area(s). Also responsible for developing/implementing the R&D deployment strategy for the area(s).

Position Responsibilities:

  • Research integrity: Ensuring results meet EPRI’s strong commitment to research quality and independence; Communicating EPRI research results to a broad set of public, industry and government stakeholders
  • Team Management: Leading a team of 5-10 staff working on a variety of project and program level tasks related to water availability, water quality, fish protection and protected/endangered species
  • Innovation: Driving a culture of innovation that produces actionable ideas for technology development, R&D and technical applications
  • Members: Leading research advisory/planning interactions with existing and prospective funders
  • Business Development: Ensuring funding growth through new collaborative R&D, government grant and technical support opportunities
  • R&D Management: Leading the development and execution of EPRI’s research portfolio in the Water and Ecosystems program area
  • Metrics: Responsible for ensuring the team meets annual program area metrics (e.g. financial, revenue, customer satisfaction, safety)
  • Accountable for program spending and product quality
  • Manages and controls one or more major functional areas or multiple sections/departments, handling significant number of personnel & contractors in the execution of their roles
  • Identifies the most qualified internal and contractor team to complete the work. Selects contractors, frames statements of work
  • Directs the work of the team to assure technical and financial milestones are met
  • Responsible for employee selection, performance management, and development planning.
  • Responsible for mentoring and guiding staff
  • Establishes operational objectives and work plans and delegates assignments to staff and/or managers
  • Responsible for the program level advisory structure
  • Recommends changes to policy where appropriate and establishes procedures that affect the immediate operation
  • Candidate will be required to travel 25%-33% time

Education, Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Advanced degree in science or engineering. Equivalent experience may be substitued for an advanced degree
    M.S or Ph.D in a discipline relevent to the water and ecosystem sciences preferred
  • Experience in performing and/or managing research activities relevant to EPRI’s work in the Water and Ecosystem Sciences Area required:
  • Minimum of 5 years of people management and leadership experience overseeing an area of technical complexity required
  • Effective in both interpersonal interactions and in making formal presentations to convey the value of the Program and assure understanding of customer needs required
  • Proven leadership and management capability overseeing an area of technical complexity
  • Proven people management experience
  • Experience in performing and/or managing research activities
  • Effective in both interpersonal interactions and in making formal presentations to convey the value of the Program and assure understanding of customer needs
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Responsible for funding, spending and workforce participation in program area
  • Works directly with member advisors to ensure member engagement and guidance
  • Presents Program content, value and R&D at member locations and with member leadership
  • May present program activities to the Sector Council
  • Has working knowledge of the various Sector programs, strategy and values and aligns Program activities to support cross program participation
  • Possesses complete knowledge of the Sector Programs, strategy to represent the Sector to organizations and members
