Position: Regional AFOLU Carbon Development Specialist – EAST AFRICA

Location: Lilongwe, Malawi

Terra Global Capital is one of the implementing partners on the USAID-funded Kulera Biodiversity project in Malawi. This project is designed to reduce impacts of human activity on five protected areas while improving livelihoods in communities surrounding these areas. Improved livelihoods will result from better managing and capturing long term economic benefits from area natural resources. A key element of the project is to reduce greenhouse gas emissions through REDD and increase carbon sequestration in soil and vegetation, thereby generating carbon credits which will provide an additional revenue stream and financial incentives for natural resource conservation. Terra Global is seeking an in-country carbon development specialist to manage the carbon components of the project working closely with our in-country partners responsible for the implementation of the project.

Responsibilities

  • Manage the implementation of carbon development work plans in Malawi with in-country implementing partner(s)
  • Work closely with the Terra team in San Francisco to leverage the established processes and procedures used to develop carbon
  • Manage field data collection and monitoring by local in-country teams, including training, planning, managing, and quality control, and ensuring data organization and security
  • Ensure consistent and timely flow of information and data from the field to the Terra San Francisco team
  • Coordinate training sessions and discussions with government and communities in Malawi to develop agreements regarding carbon rights and benefit sharing
  • Research and manage all relevant background documents regarding land tenure, natural resource rights, etc
  • Work with the in-country implementing partner to set-up the monitoring processes and procedures necessary to support project verification on an on-going basis
  • Prepare regular reports for internal and external use

Qualifications

  • Experience in project design and implementation of community-based projects
  • Understanding of AFOLU market standards, guidelines and protocols
  • Direct experience in multi-partner project management for natural resource projects
  • Developing country field level work
  • Experience working in an international organization

Educational and Work Experience Requirements

  • At least 5 years of work experience in the natural resources sector
  • Coursework or practical experience in applied natural sciences desired Terra Company Overview

  • Exclusively devoted to agriculture, forestry and other land-use carbon markets
  • Technical innovator; first to submit methodology for mosaic avoided deforestation (REDD) to VCS

  • Partners with NGOs, governments and private sector to collaboratively develop and monetize carbon credits
  • Global project pipeline with diversification across regions, project types, developer types and market standards
  • Expertise in developing A/R, agroforestry, REDD, IFM and agricultural projects
  • Focused on developing cost-effective rigorous carbon accounting and innovative financing structures
