MANAGER, FOREST AND LANDSCAPE RESTORATION – IUCN

 The initiative will invest in strategic global, national and sector analysis, tools to assess, evaluate and track restoration opportunities and enable systematic pooling and the sharing of individual findings and analysis that help policy makers and practitioners implement robust strategies to scale-up landscape restoration. While the initiative is focused on establishing enabling conditions its success will be determined on the basis of the outcomes it helps facilitate, namely the degree to which pioneer investment in restoration has been mobilized and commitment and actions have been undertaken with respect to restoring 150 million hectares of deforested and degraded lands by 2020.  

 

The thematic work of the initiative will focus on:

 

A. Restoration as a vehicle for carbon-intensive land stewardship

B. Understanding and mobilizing land-use dynamics as a contribution to landscape restoration (the role of farm fallow systems)  

C. Optimizing adaptation and mitigation synergies in landscape restoration practice

D. Understanding links between water, water flows and landscape restoration, including its implications for urban areas

E. Governance, institutional and monitoring arrangements to advance landscape restoration

F. Models for private and public sector investment in support of landscape restoration in both semi-natural mosaic and heavily modified (industrialized and/or mined) landscapes  

 

The support team for the initiative will include:

 

• Full time Manager

• Knowledge and Communications Officer

• Project Assistant

 

Responsibilities:

 

• Overall responsibility for the timely and quality delivery of the initiative’s key deliverables and outputs, ensuring that each investment responds to well-defined demands, meets credible peer review standards and is accompanied with a clear and credible uptake pathway
• Intellectual and strategic leadership with respect to the role of knowledge, tools and capacity in shaping and catalyzing demonstrable action to achieve the Bonn Challenge
• Day to day leadership and line management of the initiative’s support team, secondments and consultants  
• Responsibility for building and maintaining close working relationships with the initiative’s implementation partners, particularly those governments, institutions, NGOS, communities and companies whose commitment and action will deliver the Bonn Challenge
• Contribution to the broader strategic and planning activities of the Global Partnership on Forest Landscape Restoration and the role of IUCN as the GPFLR secretariat.
 
PRINCIPLE OPERATIONAL DUTIES
 
• Prepare, implement and monitor progress against the initiative’s Annual Work Plan
• Liaise with, and regularly update, DFID and other donors, ensuring contractual obligations on reporting and auditing are fully met
• Administer the initiative’s funds including day to day oversight of initiative expenditure against agreed budgets and track “value for money” against agreed operational outputs
• Develop and implement a medium term fundraising strategy that provides the GPFLR “knowledge, tools and capacity” platform with expansion potential during the current funding window and the necessary stability beyond (ideally to 2020 over the period of the Bonn Challenge)  
• Maintain inter-agency relationships with other international and regional organizations working on issues relevant to the programme and to DFID’s KNOW-FOR programme more broadly, including Program on Forests (PROFOR), the Centre for International Forestry Research (CIFOR) and other members of the Collaborative Partnership on Forests
• Organize Advisory Board meetings, including prepare the agenda based on views solicited from members of the Board, and ensure that a summary record of decisions taken is circulated for comments and is finalized  
• Support the Chair of the GPFLR to promote and disseminate the outcomes of the initiative.
 
 
Requirements:  
 
• Masters degree in forestry, natural resources management, biodiversity conservation or other relevant discipline  
 
• Minimum 10 years of experience in developing, managing and implementing multi-stakeholder projects with defined objectives, deliverables, monitoring and evaluation of results, including a minimum of 4 years of experience working in Africa, Asia or Latin America  
 
• Demonstrated understanding of issues related to landscape restoration at the field, national and international level  
 
• Strategic thinking and ability to strategically capitalise on unforeseen opportunities  
 
• An established track record of working with evaluative and applied research and analytical methods  
 
• Superior interpersonal, networking and diplomatic skills  
 
• Proven fundraising abilities  
 
• Ability to work effectively within a large decentralized workforce of professionals of different nationalities and to mobilize it towards common goals  
 
• Strong networks into development and research organizations worldwide  
 
• Excellent communication skills in English, and ability to communicate in other languages an asset  
 
• Good computer skills in MS-applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook)  
 
• Ability to travel about 96 days a year
