Livelihood Manager -BioCarbon Partners

Scope of work:

BioCarbon Partners (BCP) is a dynamic African-registered and headquartered REDD+ project development and management company. Since 2012, BCP has been implementing the Lower Zambezi REDD+ Project (LZRP) in Rufunsa District. The LZRP is the first REDD+ project in Zambia, and has achieved verification against the Verified Carbon Standard (VCS) and “triple gold” validation against the Climate, Community and Biodiversity Alliance (CCBA). This is the first REDD+ project in Africa to achieve these validations.

In 2014, BCP has begun an expansion of our successful REDD+ project model into potential new areas within Lusaka, Eastern and Muchinga Provinces. This project expansion is largely funded by USAID through the Community-based Forest-management Program (CFP). The aim of the CFP is to secure a minimum of 700,000 hectares of biologically significant intact forest under verified REDD+ projects, and to engage with local stakeholders and implement improved land management practices on approximately 1.4 million additional hectares adjacent to these REDD+ project areas.

BCP is seeking a highly talented and dynamic individual with a strong technical background in the implementation and management of livelihoods activities (conservation farming, livestock,income-generating activities) to fill the role of Livelihoods Manager in the context of the CFP.This individual must have a strong background in rurally-based fieldwork, particularly in the African context, and must possess a strong background in project and team management.

The Livelihoods Manager will be based in Lusaka. The position will involve significant travel to BCP’s field-based project sites, located in Lusaka, Eastern and Muchinga Provinces.

The Livelihoods Manager will oversee implementation of CFP’s community livelihoods activities and enterprise development strategies and plans across all program sites. S/He will plan and oversee the timely execution of all livelihoods-related activities. S/He will supervise and mentor relevant Community Engagement Team staff, including CFP’s Community Engagement Managers (CEMs) and Community Officers (COs). S/He will work closely with the other technical leads and managers, as well as partners and various “short term” international technicalspecialists to review approaches and strengthen interventions to promote sustainable forest-based and agricultural-based enterprises, and to reduce threats to biodiversity linked to livelihood activities. S/He will collaborate to identify and strengthen market linkages and improve trade of commercially viable non-timber forest products, tree crops, and agricultural products, and help establish and organize producers’ associations and cooperatives.

An important aspect of this role will be to ensure integration of livelihoods and enterprise development activities with the other relevant activities and actors, in particular with CFP community-level activities that support natural resource governance, social inclusion, sustainable resource management, and biodiversity conservation. The Livelihoods Manager will be responsible for ensuring that all livelihoods activities implemented and supported by BCP in the context of the CFP have a clear, direct and verifiable link to deforestation mitigation and/or demonstrable forest protection efforts.

MAIN TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

The Livelihoods Manager is an integral member of the CFP team and will ensure integration of livelihoods and enterprise development activities with the other relevant activities and actors supported by the program. In order to assume his/her responsibilities s/he must establish a high level of interaction and coordination with all other members of the program implementation team.

As a member of the core team, the Livelihoods Manager shares the following general responsibilities with other CFP technicians:
• Participate with other team members in the definition of the overall program strategy and the preparation of annual work plans;
• Define performance indicators and participate in on-going monitoring of activities and their impacts;
• Contribute to collecting data to measuring the extent of achievement of program objectives;
• Provide timely inputs for the preparation of monthly, quarterly, and annual reports;
• Participate in ordinary and special program team meetings, work sessions with USAID, and exchanges with Zambian government institutions, other partner organizations and donors;
• Conduct annual performance reviews of any employees supervised.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE

Required:

• Strong background in technical aspects of livelihood activity implementation (conservation farming, agriculture, livestock, association formation, governance, income-generating activities, microfinance, savings and loans, NTFP, CBNRM, etc).
• Demonstrated field experience in rural development work in Africa; with preferable link to environmental protection and/or sustainable resource management
• Minimum BA or BS, with Masters-level preferred
• Strong communication skills—written and spoken
• Strong understanding of (and buy-in to) the core values of BCP, including sustainable entrepreneurial approaches to development, community-based conservation, and humility.
• Demonstrated project management experience.
• Demonstrated experience with impacts assessments, tracking and evaluation.
• Report-writing; strong written communication skills and ability to present data
•  Experience working on teams; excellent team-work, dynamic
• Leadership and mentoring experience
• Demonstrated teaching and training ability

• Willingness to spend significant amounts of time traveling in basic conditions (including camping in rural, remote or village areas).
• Ability to manage external relations with local and international partners and evaluators
• Strong computer skills, including MS Word, Excel and Power Point
• Ability to recognize necessary information and facilitate information-flows
• Fluency in English required
• Valid Drivers License

Preferred:

• Research experience; ability to collect, analyze and present such data
• Experience with survey-completion and data collection; Monitoring and Evaluation experience (or exposure) preferred
• Leadership experience; professional team-management experience
• Proficiency in additional languages preferred, including local languages (from Lusaka, Eastern, Muchinga Provinces)
• Motorbike license preferred, and/or willingness to obtain one.
