GLOBAL PROGRAMME DIRECTOR

The Global Canopy Programme (GCP) is an alliance of scientific institutions around the world, applying the tropical forest intelligence of our networks to protect forests and the vital ecosystem services they provide to humanity.

We are a think-tank and catalyst, actively testing innovative ways to protect tropical forests in a globalised economy that still values them more dead than alive. For the last decade we have successfully built up policy and business programmes to complement our science heritage. Resulting initiatives such as the Forest Footprint Disclosure Project, the Forests Now Declaration, and the Little REDD Book series have been widely recognized for their impact.

We are now actively exploring ways of working with partners in Amazonia to help catalyse a new ‘Biosphere Economy’ in the region. A key focus of our work will be on ecosystem services and poverty alleviation through our flagship Andes-Amazon science and development project. This aims to link bright minds in research, policy, business and finance to investigate how sustaining tropical forests as natural capital assets can be an exemplar for the greening of the world economy. The GCP’s multidisciplinary approach, global partners and networks in science, policy and business and our small-organisation agility, provide a platform for achieving this ambitious goal.

To be successful, we need to further develop this conceptual approach and tie our programmes and their respective networks together more closely behind our vision. We are therefore hiring a new Global Programme Director to help drive forward the work of the GCP from our office in Oxford, UK. The successful candidate will be a leader with a proven track-record in tropical forest conservation, organizational management, and with direct experience and networks in Amazonia.   He or she will work closely with the Executive Director and Heads of Programmes to refine the GCP’s strategic goals, and will be tasked with translating this strategy into successful action with full operational responsibility for the organisation’s programmes and projects.

PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Strategic leadership: guiding the organization in collaboration with the Executive Director and Trustees.
  • Spokesperson: working with the Executive Director and the Communications team to speak for the organization.
  • Relationships: establishing good working relationships and collaborative arrangements with relevant stakeholders, funders, and other organizations.
  • Operational planning: working with Programme Heads to frame goals and objectives that contribute to the strategic direction of the organization.
  • Operations: efficiently and effectively manage day-to-day operations of the organisation and its programmes.
  • Organisational policies: working with the Executive Director and Trustees to review, prepare and implement organisational policies.
  • Team leadership: fostering effective team work between staff at all levels.
  • Monitoring: of the day-to-day delivery of programmes and projects to maintain quality and maximize synergies.
  • Reviewing and Reporting: regularly on programmes and projects and the organisation’s overall progress.
  • Project pipeline management: to meet the GCP’s mission, priorities and capacity.
  • Oversight: of planning, budgeting, implementation and evaluation of programmes and key projects.
  • Human Resources: planning and management to ensure appropriate staffing for programme and project delivery; creating a harmonious working environment; and working in accordance with organizational policies and all appropriate legislation and regulations.
  • Performance management: including monitoring staff performance and conducting annual performance reviews; coaching and mentoring staff as appropriate to improve performance.
  • Financial planning and management: working with the Director, CFO and staff to prepare and manage budgets.
  • Fund-raising: working with the Director, Head of Development and Trustees to secure adequate funding for the operation of the organization; overseeing fundraising planning and contributing to funding proposals as necessary.

KEY SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE

  • Significant experience of working in tropical forested regions, preferably Amazonia. Relevant experience of working in tropical Africa or Asia an additional advantage.
  • Direct experience working with local communities on deforestation and related mitigation and adaptation measures.
  • Direct experience of working for governments and NGOs in tropical forest regions, preferably in Amazonia.
  • Experience of engagement with policymakers at the National and Sub-National level on REDD+.
  • Cross-sectoral project management experience working in the following areas: science, policy, finance and business related to the valuation of forest ecosystem services and reducing deforestation.
  • Strong project and team management experience in the NGO sector.
  • Fluent in English, Portuguese and Spanish. Other relevant languages advantageous.
  • Able to manage a fast-moving, dynamic, innovative organisation, in a collaborative and friendly manner.

The job will be based in Oxford, UK with significant international travel.
