Senior Project Analyst (Portland, OR) - The Climate Trust

Join an established environmental non-profit organization and help contribute to solving climate change, one of the most complex and challenging issues of our generation. This position, based in Portland, Oregon, will be responsible for expanding The Climate Trust’s Northwest ‘climate friendly’ agricultural initiatives (soil carbon sequestration, biogas production, nutrient management). The position requires an individual with strong proposal, technical and analytical capabilities, interpersonal skills, and project evaluation expertise. This is a highly technical position and individuals with a strong scientific background are encouraged to apply. Major Responsibilities

  • Conduct and collaborate with carbon project and technical experts on examining the potential to design climate friendly projects including but not limited to, improved fertilizer management practices, commercialization of bio-fertilizers, and application of biochar.
  • Evaluate the practice change, technological, and human dimension aspects that determine not only the technical potential, but project feasibility of different agricultural carbon sector opportunities.
  • Assess environmental service market opportunities in the agricultural sector and evaluate design approaches to creating and implementing climate friendly farming practices that would be eligible to generate fungible environmental credits.
  • Conduct outreach to farmers, rural stakeholders and agricultural agents through meetings, conferences, workshops and project-level interactions.
  • Prepare technical analysis, and project evaluations as directed to develop and support acquisition efforts and/or advisory services contracts.
  • Assist with other duties as assigned such as protocol method development and interpretation, proposal writing, organizational strategy input, presentation support, and other general tasks.
Required Qualifications
  • A bachelor’s or master’s degree (preferred) in natural sciences and 3 to 6 years of professional experience with a preference for ecosystem services related experience.
  • Demonstrated experience in the soil sciences.
  • Knowledge of carbon project methodology development, project evaluation, monitoring and verification, field experience, and emerging climate change policies.
  • High degree of comfort with independently performing research and analysis on new technical concepts and assessing project risks against future uncertainties.
  • Experience working under pressure and adapting to changing priorities.
  • Strong writing, research and presentation skills with an ability to translate technical concepts into written or oral deliverables that are accessible to non-technical audiences.
  • Familiarity with federal Farm Bill incentive programs (e.g. EQIP) and/or federal or state agricultural agencies.
  • Willingness to travel.
