International Finance Corporation's (IFC) Environmental Finance Group is the World Bank Group's private sector investment arm that considers both commercially viable projects and higher-risk ventures in a wide range of environmental sectors. They work with the relevant IFC Investment Departments to access market-rate debt and equity financing for commercially viable projects. IFC can also access market-based instruments, such as greenhouse gas emission reductions, that offer funding to private companies in return for environmental benefits. IFC has a dedicated Carbon Finance team that structures these transactions and manages the Carbon Finance Facility. They are also interested in exploring new opportunities for Environmental Service Payments. For innovative ventures that can't yet support fully commercial financing but offer major environmental benefits, IFC can seek concessional (i.e., below market-rate) funding. This funding is limited and is available on a highly selective basis. IFC supports projects of this type in order to accelerate market acceptance of business models and technologies that show increased environmental sustainability.
