2 August 2012 The opening speakers of the Ecosystem Services Partnership Conference included Bob Costanza from Portland State University and Dolf de Groot of Waginengen University as well as Glenn-Marie Lange, the Program Manger of the WAVES (Wealth Accounting and Valuation of Ecosystem Services) Partnership with the World Bank. Early topics of discussion included published research and the Ecosystem Services Partnership’s support of a network of practitioners and research, data and knowledge-sharing initiatives and learning sites.

Lange also commented on the importance of natural capital accounting as a tool for measuring sustainability, highlighting pilot accounts and the partnership’s work implementing SEEA (Systems of Environmental-Economic Accounts).

Presentations continued with comments from Nikkola Smith of the US Forest Service, about the incorporation of the ecosystem services approach into forest management.

Nancy Steele of the Los Angeles Council for Watershed Health talked about plans and projects to use stormwater to recharge groundwater through green infrastructure installations.
